RNZYS Kawau Island Youth Training Week In December 2021 - Ellie Petty, Ella Bever, Riana Lane and I travelled to Auckland to join the other eager young crews attending the RNZYS Kawau Island Youth training week. Hayden Smith, Josh Smith, Thomas Powell and Liam Townsend also attended. From the Yacht Squadron at Westhaven we were towed to Kawau Island on our Elliot 7s. We were camping on the grounds at Lidgard House. The week was full of great learning experiences. We spent the mornings training and learning to use gennakers and spinnakers. The afternoons were spent putting these new skills to the test racing each other. A highlight of the week for me was racing around Kawau Island. The girls didn’t place very well in the overall standings but we all learnt a lot. I wish to thank Whangarei Cruising Club for their support in getting us to Kawau. We appreciate everything the Club does to support the Youth sailors.
